I received the Ouray Ice Park Black Spyder hoody just as the weather began cooling off here in the Great Lakes. I've been wearing it a lot for hiking an fitness walks, and snowshoeing once winter made an appearance. This is my third Black Spyder, and I think NWA has the design well sorted. The new fabric is a bit heavier than the earlier material, a bit warmer, and less clingy when pulling on over a base layer. Seems to dry about as well, which is good. I'm 6'1", 43 - 44" chest, 35" arms. A size large is a good fit for me - fits comfortably over a base layer top, which is all I want; sleeve length is good; body length is more than enough to stay put under a harness or a pack hip belt. The hood cut is good - a little loose without being sloppy. Easy to remove or pull on, and stays put under a climbing helmet's straps. I still wish the hood was cut to give me better coverage on my face, but every hoody has at least one problem for some user. On balance this one works well. As for function, I've worn this over a base layer and under a wind shell down to the teens (F) and stayed comfortable. What else could you want?
As noted, I have 3 Black Spyders, and this is by far the best - the fit is dialed, the hood works, the fabric is warm but not too warm, the sleeves give me good reach, and the garment dries quickly. This is now my favorite warm layer.
